Eco-friendly carpet cleaning — what it actually means

"Eco-friendly" gets used a lot in cleaning. Sometimes it means something, sometimes it's just on the label. This is what it actually means when we say we use eco-friendly products for carpet cleaning, and why it matters — especially in a home with kids, pets, or anyone with allergies.

The problem with harsh carpet cleaning chemicals

Traditional carpet cleaning products work — they break down grime and lift stains effectively. But many of them leave residue in the carpet fibres that doesn't fully rinse out. That residue attracts dirt faster, so your carpet looks clean for a few weeks and then starts picking up grime again more quickly than before the clean.

There's also the fume issue. Some conventional cleaning agents release fumes during and after application that linger in a room for hours. In a house where someone has asthma, or where a baby is crawling on that carpet, that's not ideal.

Non-toxic, biodegradable cleaning solutions are formulated to rinse clean without leaving residue, and they don't off-gas. The carpet gets just as clean — it just doesn't come with the side effects.

Why Cape Town carpets need more attention than most

Cape Town's climate does specific things to carpets. The southeaster brings fine dust and sand into homes — particularly in the Southern Suburbs and along the Atlantic Seaboard. That grit works its way into carpet fibres and acts like sandpaper on the weave over time, breaking down the pile from the inside.

In winter, the damp from the Cape's wet season sits in carpets that don't dry properly — especially in rooms without much airflow. That creates conditions for mould and a musty smell that vacuuming won't fix.

Homes near the coast — Sea Point, Camps Bay, Hout Bay — also deal with salt air, which can affect fabrics differently to inland areas. None of this is catastrophic, but it does mean carpets in Cape Town homes tend to need professional cleaning more regularly than the generic "once a year" advice suggests.

What you can do between professional cleans

A professional clean every 6 to 12 months makes a real difference, but what you do in between matters too:

  • Vacuum at least once a week in high-traffic areas — more if you have pets. A good vacuum removes the surface build-up before it gets pushed deeper into the pile.
  • Deal with spills immediately. Blot — don't rub. Rubbing spreads the stain and pushes it further in.
  • For pet odours between cleans, sprinkle baking soda on the affected area, leave it for 20 minutes, then vacuum. It won't fix a deep stain but it absorbs surface odour.
  • Put mats at your front door. Most of the dirt in a carpet came in on someone's shoes.
  • In damp rooms, open windows after rain. A carpet that stays damp is where mould starts.

When it's time for a professional clean

The signs are usually pretty clear:

  • The carpet looks dull or flat even after vacuuming
  • There's a smell in the room that you can't trace to anything obvious
  • Stains that blotting hasn't shifted
  • Allergy symptoms that get worse at home — dust mites live in carpet and regular vacuuming doesn't remove them
  • It's been more than a year, or you've moved into a property and don't know the history of the carpet

How long does it take to dry?

This is the question most people ask before booking. With low-moisture cleaning methods — which we use for most carpets — the carpet is usually dry in 2 to 4 hours. In Cape Town's winter when humidity is higher, it can take a bit longer. Opening windows and using a fan makes a real difference.

Steam cleaning uses more moisture and takes longer to dry — typically 4 to 6 hours. It's better for certain types of staining and very dirty carpets, but for maintenance cleans the low-moisture method is usually sufficient and faster to dry.
