How to tell when your couch needs a clean
You don't need to wait for it to look visibly dirty. These are the signs it's time:
- There's a stale or musty smell when you sit down
- The fabric looks flat or dull compared to when you bought it
- There are stains you've been living with — wine, food, pet accidents
- You have pets that sleep on it regularly
- You've had it for two or more years and it's never been cleaned

What the cleaning process actually looks like
The first thing is checking the fabric. Velvet, microfibre, linen, leather, and synthetic blends all need different approaches. Using the wrong method — or the wrong product — can damage the material or push stains deeper. We test on a small area before doing anything to the whole couch.
After that it gets vacuumed properly — not a quick pass, but a thorough vacuum that pulls out dust, hair, and debris from the seams and creases. Then stains get pre-treated. This is where we tell you honestly what's likely to come out and what might not. Old, set-in stains — especially if they were scrubbed or treated with the wrong products — sometimes can't be fully removed. We'd rather tell you that upfront than have you disappointed at the end.
The main clean is either steam or dry, depending on the fabric. Steam is more thorough and kills bacteria, but certain delicate fabrics can't take the heat or moisture. Dry cleaning uses less moisture and is better for materials that can't get too wet.
After cleaning it gets deodorised if needed and then left to dry — usually 2 to 4 hours. Open windows and a fan speeds that up considerably.
Fabric vs leather — does it make a difference?
Yes, quite a bit. Fabric couches absorb more — smells, spills, dust — so they need more regular cleaning. Leather is easier to wipe down day-to-day but still needs a proper clean and condition once a year to stop it from drying out and cracking.
Velvet is the trickiest fabric. It marks easily, shows watermarks if cleaned incorrectly, and needs a professional to do it without leaving it looking worse than before.
