Bin cleaning in Cape Town — why bins smell in summer and when to get them cleaned
Cape Town summers are hot enough that a single week with food waste in the bin is enough for it to start smelling. Add flies and you have maggots within a few days. By the time collection day comes around, the inside of the bin has a layer of liquid at the bottom, the walls are stained, and no amount of rinsing with a garden hose actually sorts it out.
Most people live with it. But a proper bin clean — high-pressure hot water, disinfectant, done on your property — makes a noticeable difference and takes about ten minutes per bin.
Why bins get bad quickly in Cape Town
- Summer heat accelerates bacterial growth — what takes weeks in winter takes days in December
- Food packaging often has liquid residue that pools at the bottom of the bin
- Cape Town's wind blows dust and debris into bins even when the lid is closed
- Once flies get in and lay eggs, maggots appear within 24 to 48 hours in warm weather
- Council collection is once a week — in peak summer that's long enough for serious odour build-up
What the clean involves
We come to your property. The bin is emptied (so book after collection day if possible), then cleaned inside and out with high-pressure hot water to remove built-up residue, staining, and bacteria. A disinfectant is applied and left to work, then the bin is rinsed and left to drain. The smell is usually gone immediately — the difference between a freshly cleaned bin and an uncleaned one is significant.
For households with multiple bins — general waste, recycling, garden waste — we do them all in one visit.
What does bin cleaning cost in Cape Town?

Bins that haven't been cleaned in a long time or have heavy residue take a bit longer. We give a price before we start.
When to book
The best time to book is the day after your regular bin collection — so we're cleaning an empty bin rather than working around waste. Once or twice a year is enough for most households. In summer, monthly makes more sense if you're putting cooked food or meat packaging in the general waste bin.
