Gutter cleaning in Cape Town — when it actually matters and what it costs
Most Cape Town homeowners think about gutters twice a year: once when it's raining and they notice water spilling over the edge, and once when they see a plant growing out of the gutter. By that point the gutters have been blocked for a while and have probably already caused some damage.
Cape Town's wet winters are concentrated between May and August. Gutters that go into winter blocked cause overflow every time it rains — and that water ends up against the walls and foundations, not draining away. The fix is straightforward, but it needs to happen before the rains arrive.
Signs your gutters need cleaning
- Water spills over the edge of the gutter during rain instead of flowing to the downpipe
- Visible plant growth or moss in the gutter
- The gutter is sagging or pulling away from the fascia board — often caused by the weight of wet debris
- Staining or damp marks on the wall below the gutter line
- You can't remember when they were last cleaned
What the clean involves
Debris — leaves, seeds, bird nests, compacted dirt — is cleared from the gutters by hand or with a scoop and removed from the property. Downpipes are checked and flushed to make sure they're clear. The gutters are then flushed with water to check flow and confirm everything is draining to the downpipe correctly.
If a downpipe is blocked further down, that's usually cleared with a hose at pressure. If there's a structural issue — a sagging section or a broken bracket — we'll point it out. That kind of repair is beyond the scope of a clean, but it's worth knowing about before winter.

When to book in Cape Town
March and April — before the rains arrive — is the best time. Leaves from autumn deciduous trees are falling, which is the main source of blockages in suburbs like Constantia, Newlands, and Claremont where there are a lot of mature trees.
Once a year is enough for most properties. If you have large trees overhanging the roof, twice a year makes more sense — after autumn and again in late summer when debris from summer growth has accumulated.
