Ciyeza Cleaning — Cape Town
Airbnb cleaning in Cape Town — what hosts get wrong and how to protect your rating
Cleanliness is the number one thing guests mention in Airbnb reviews. Not the view, not the location, not the decor. Cleanliness. And the reviews that hurt most aren't from guests who found the place completely dirty — they're from guests who found one thing. A hair on the bathroom floor. A smell in the kitchen. Fingerprints on the mirror that were missed in a quick turnover.
Cape Town is one of the busiest short-term rental markets in South Africa. In peak season — December through February, and again around the school holidays — hosts are doing back-to-back turnovers with very little time between guests. That's when standards slip. And once you get a 4-star review mentioning cleanliness, it affects your ranking and your future bookings.
We provide BnB cleaning servicesfor Airbnb hosts across Cape Town. This is what we've learned from cleaning hundreds of short-term rentals, and what to think about if you're trying to protect your listing's rating.
The things guests actually notice
After years of doing Airbnb turnovers, we've noticed a pattern in what guests report in reviews versus what hosts think they're being rated on.
Hosts often focus on the big things — floors clean, bed made, kitchen wiped down. Guests notice the details: the inside of the microwave, the bathroom drain, the glass shower door that has water marks from the previous guest, the bin that was emptied but not wiped out.
These are the spots that get missed in a rushed turnover. They're not difficult to clean — they just take time and attention, which is hard to maintain when you're doing it yourself between a 10am checkout and a 2pm check-in.
Why Cape Town Airbnb hosts use a dedicated cleaning service
The maths works out pretty quickly. If a bad cleanliness review drops your rating and costs you two or three bookings, the money you saved doing the clean yourself wasn't worth it. Professional cleaners also work faster — a team that does this every day moves through a property more efficiently than a host doing it after a long week.
The other thing is reliability. During peak season you need to know the property is going to be ready. You shouldn't be the one doing a rushed turnaround because your cleaner cancelled last minute.
Hosts in Sea Point, Green Point, Camps Bay, and the City Bowl — where turnovers happen fast and standards are high — tend to be the most focused on this. But it applies across all of Cape Town's short-term rental areas.
What a proper turnover clean covers
A proper Airbnb turnover isn't just a wipe-down. Here's what it should include every time:
- Full clean of all rooms — bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchen, living areas
- Linen and towel changeover — freshly made bed, folded towels
- Inside the microwave and wiping down the oven and fridge exterior
- Bathroom — toilet, shower, tiles, drain, mirror, taps
- Bins emptied and wiped out, not just emptied
- Spot-clean of walls, doors, light switches and door handles
- Check for things guests left behind
- Restock basics if you leave them — toilet paper, soap, coffee
That last point — restocking — is often the difference between a guest who feels looked after and one who feels like they're in a hotel that forgot to top up the toiletries.
What about same-day turnovers?
They happen. Someone books at the last minute, or a guest extends their stay and you didn't see the notification in time. A same-day turnover — checkout at 10, new guests at 2 — is completely doable, but it requires a team that can get there and move quickly.
We do same-day turnovers when slots are available. The earlier you call us the better — morning is ideal so we can plan the day. We'll tell you straight whether we can make it work.
